Salawat refers to the prayers recited to show respect and love for our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), to remember him, and to attain his intercession. Sending Salawat is a very important act of worship for Muslims, as Allah and His angels also send blessings upon the Prophet.
The Virtue of Sending Salawat
In Surah Al-Ahzab verse 56: "Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace."
The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold, erase ten of his sins, and raise his rank by ten degrees." (Nasa'i).
What does "Allahumma Salli Ala Muhammad" Mean?
The meaning of one of the shortest and most common Salawat, "Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad", is: "O Allah! Send Your mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad."
How Many Salawat Should Be Sent Daily?
There is no specific limit to sending Salawat; the more it is recited, the more reward is gained. However, for the blessing of daily life, the acceptance of prayers, and the illumination of the heart, reciting it at least 100 or 1000 times a day is highly recommended.
